Keeping children in school

Tanzania is struggling with huge dropout rates from primary and secondary school. TRANSLED focusses on language, gender and social class to address the high dropout rates.

Project title: TRANSLED (Transformation, Language, Education and Development)

Background

Dropout rates are a major concern on a global scale, particularly in Africa. In addition many children, for various reasons, do not enroll in school at all or start school much later than the normal age. There are probably both language and gender and class related issues involved in the decision not to attend school or drop out prematurely.

The project

The project aims at contribute to more informed policy-making and better service delivery in the education sector, leading in time to an increased number of children completing good quality primary and secondary education in Tanzania. The research planned to be undertaken through the Masters and PhD programmes will throw light on this and other issues affecting universal primary and secondary education in Tanzania.

Overall goal

Improved institutional capacity of State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), especially in the School of Education and School of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages as well as improved institutional capacity of the Faculty of Education of the University of Dar es Salaam, partly in support of the development of SUZA.
