Clean Energy

The image shows a close-up of solar panels stretching horizontally across a surface. The panels have a glossy finish that reflects the sunlight. In the background, a clear blue sky with some scattered white clouds can be seen.

The world is not on track to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. To achieve reduced poverty and inequality in a green world, massive investments in clean energy are needed in developing countries.

However, large groups of people are not able to pay for energy services. Combined with governance challenges such as inadequate legal and regulatory frameworks, there is insufficient interest in investing in renewable energy capacity, and transmission and distribution of electricity. In addition, the widespread use of pollution cooking methods should be replaced by clean cooking technologies.

The overarching goal of Norad’s energy portfolio is to contribute to sustainable economic development that improves living conditions and welfare, while promoting climate, environment, and nature. The portfolio has three key objectives, which are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Avoided emissions through increased renewable energy supply
  • Increased access to electricity and clean cooking technologies
  • Strengthened institutions and improved governance and transparency

We work through international partners such as the World Bank, the African Development Bank and European institutions, as well as through the private sector and the Energy for Development programme where Norwegian public agencies share their competency with sister organisations in partner countries. The Energy portfolio is primarily focused on Sub-Sahara Africa (Energy sector support through the Nansen Programme for Ukraine is not included in the energy portfolio).

Please see attached documents for more comprehensive information about the portfolio.
