Food Systems

The image features a single avocado hanging from a tree, surrounded by lush, green leaves. The avocado is vibrant and healthy-looking, with a textured skin typical of the fruit. Sunlight filters through the leaves, creating a bright and fresh atmosphere, indicative of a thriving garden or orchard environment.

Production and consumption of food are fundamental to human life and serve as a crucial foundation for all other development efforts.

What we eat – and how it is produced – has a significant impact on both people and the planet. However, since 2015, progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 has been reversed. The UN estimates that by 2030, 582 million people will still be chronically undernourished, with more than half of them living on the African continent.

The overarching goal of the portfolio is to achieve resilient and equitable food systems that ensure food security for present and future generations.

Norad will contribute towards this goal through four focus areas, that also delivers on Norway’s strategy for promoting food security in development policy:

  • Local communities are resilient and food-secure
  • Income throughout the food system is increased and distributed fairly
  • Food production is nature-friendly and climate-adapted
  • A healthy diet is accessible to all
