Human rights defenders and the SDGs

Time: 16. May, 10:30 - 11:30

Place: Norad, Bygdøy Alle 2, Oslo, Info center 5. etg.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights DefendersMary Lawlor, is coming to Oslo. We have invited her to take part in an engaging conversation with Bård Vegar Solhjell and Ingeborg Moa from the Norwegian Human Rights Fund (NHRF). There will also be room for dialogue with the audience.

The year 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 25th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right and Responsibility of Individuals, Groups and Organs of Society to Promote and Protect Universally Recognised Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (Declaration on Human Rights Defenders).

In her recent report, Mary Lawlor highlights how human rights defenders all over the world are achieving extraordinary success in multiple fields, benefiting countless populations on every continent - against intimidating odds and often despite threats and attacks. These victories are usually the result of long-term struggles and achieved in collaboration with other human rights defenders, and with a broad range of allies.

During this conversation, we will learn more about the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur and what role human rights defenders play in achieving the SDGs, bringing in examples from the NHRFs’ work in Colombia within the Forest, Environment and Human Rights Programme and the Peace and Human Rights Programme.
