Kari Skeie, former Ukraine correspondent for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), shares insights from her time reporting in a country at war. She reflects on journalistic choices and working methods in rapidly changing and unpredictable circumstances.
Oksana Brovko, director of the Association of Independent Regional Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU), shares her experience of leading efforts to sustain independent journalism under fire. Since the full-scale invasion in 2022, Brovko has supported more than 150 newsrooms with funding, safety equipment, psychological support, and everything else needed to keep local journalism alive. These outlets document the impact of war in places like Zaporizhzhia, Kropyvnytskyi, and Mykolaiv – far from the spotlight of international media. They play a crucial role in showing the consequences of war for the people most affected.
The conversation will explore the role of the press during wartime, the fight against disinformation, the struggle for funding, and what it takes to keep local journalism going under extreme conditions.
Outgoing Norad Director General Bård Vegar Solhjell and Head of the Nansen Programme at Norad, Jorun Nossum, will also share how Norwegian development assistance supports free and independent journalism in Ukraine.
