Norad and the Global Financing Facility (GFF) will co-host this event to mark 10 years of an impactful partnership to improve the health and rights of women and children in in low- and middle-income countries. At the same time we ask:

What is the future of Norway’s global leadership in health for women, children, and adolescents?

With strong leadership and investment from Norway, the Global Financing Facility (GFF) was formally launched at the third Financing for Development Conference in 2015 to accelerate efforts to end preventable maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent deaths by 2030 in low- and middle-income countries. And Norway is currently the highest GFF donor, with a total contribution of USD512.9 million to date.

Norway's support for sexual and reproductive health and rights has been a key driver in empowering women and girls, ensuring access to family planning, increasing their choice, access, voice, and agency.

To date, the GFF has supported countries in reaching:

  • 132 million pregnant women with four or more antenatal care visits
  • 164 million women with safe delivery care, and
  • 177 million newborns with early initiation of breastfeeding.
  • Additionally, GFF has helped avert 339 million unintended pregnancies by expanding access to modern contraceptives.

Results from the latest GFF annual report will be showcased, highlighting key achievements across the GFF’s 36 partner countries.

Notably, Norway has been a critical leader on an innovative local-global partnership supporting Tanzania’s leadership to crash maternal and newborn mortality in Tanzania. This event will also coincide with the publication of the results of these efforts, providing an opportunity to share insights more widely and examine the role of the GFF, Laerdal and partners at the University of Stavanger in scaling up this life-saving intervention.
