Aquaculture and development cooperation

Much useful information was presented at a seminar on aquaculture for employees at the Norwegian Embassies in Asia in January 2013.

Aquaculture in Asia is important for food security, employment and livelihoods. Aquaculture is also economically important, not only for local communities, but as foreign exchange earner as well. But there are many challenges, not least in relation to the environment and fish health.

The presentations at the seminar gave a good overview of the different aspects of aquaculture and the conditions for continued good production and growth of the sector. The seminar took place in Bangkok, in cooperation with the Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok. See the report Assessment criteria for Norwegian assistance to aquaculture in developing countries

In Thang Loi Commune in Vietnam the percentage of poor people has decreased from 48 % to 18 % in only three years. The reason for this is the formulation a new law and new regulations on aquaculture, supported by Norway.
Research on fish has given healthier and better fish, and thus increased production of fish in Vietnam. This benefits the poorest people.
