Invitation to join innovation competition: EduApp4Syria

Can you assist in developing an engaging smartphone application that can help the Syrian children who are currently out of school learn to read and contribute to their psychosocial wellbeing?

If «yes», what may be in it for you?

  • We will fund the development and testing of the best designs. We have set aside approximately 1.7 million USD for the funding of between 1-2 applications

  • We will offer R&D input from world-class expertise in the process

  • We will ensure high visibility and showcase the best applications (and those who have created them) to key players in the mobile industry

  • And as part of this you can contribute to learning and improved psychosocial wellbeing for Syrian children

  • See the tender documents for EduAppforSyria

The process has been started with an initial competition from which up to five winning participants will be selected. These winners will be invited to enter into research and development contracts with Norad.

Deadline for the initial competition was April 1st 2016 at 1pm CET.

The contracts will involve several separate phases for which economic incentives will be paid out. At each phase we will narrow the field down, so that we end up with 1-2 winning applications at the end of the contract period.

Who is behind this competition?

Project partners are the Norwegian government, in cooperation with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), All Children Reading: Grand Challenge for Development, the mobile network operator Orange, and the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE).

In addition, UNICEF’s Innovation Unit has joined the partnership, and will contribute with funding and expert advice for field testing of applications.

Further relevant partners may be added throughout the project.

Do you have relevant input that can help us reach more users with the EduApp4Syria-games?

As part of the initial competition, we created a Facebook group called EduApp4Syria, to help potential competitors team up with one another.

We are keeping this group active as a forum to help with outreach of the winning games.
