Moderator: Rachael Petersen

Research Analyst, Global Forest Watch at the World Resources Institute

Rachael Petersen is a Research Analyst with Global Forest Watch at the World Resources Institute in the United States. In her current role, Rachael coordinates research partners around the world to develop operational real-time forest monitoring systems. Previously, as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow, Rachael travelled to remote indigenous communities across five countries to research local uses of technology to preserve nature and culture. Previously, she supported indigenous rights in REDD+ as part of the Amazon Basin team at the Environmental Defense Fund. 

Tasso Azevedo

Coordinator, SEEG Network and MapBiomas

Tasso Azevedo is the coordinator of the SEEG (System of Estimation of GHG Emissions) and MapBiomas (Project of Anual Land Cover Mapping of Brasil) initiative of the Climate Observatory in Brazil. Former Head and Chief of Brazilian Forest Service.  He was Co-designer of the Plan to Combat Deforestation in the Amazon and designer of the Amazon Fund.

Jocelyn Dow

Chair, Guyana Forestry Commission

Jocelyn Dow is the Chair of Guyana Forestry Commission. .Jocelyn is an activist at the national, regional and international level and a founding member of Red Thread, a women collective in Guyana.
Jocelyn is committed to environmentally sound development, exemplified in her pioneering furniture company, Liana Cane Interiors which is based on the sustainable use of non-timber forest products. She was appointed to the United Nations Secretary General Panel of Eminent Persons for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in September 2002.

Nirarta “Koni” Samadhi

Country director, WRI Indonesia

Tjokorda Nirarta Samadhi is a country director at WRI Indonesia. He initiated One Map movement and moratorium of new license on natural primary forest and peatland during his tenure as Chair of Task Force at the National REDD+ Agency Establishment at Indonesian President Office (2011-2014). The One Map is currently transformed into One Map Policy by way of Presidential Regulation No.9/2016. This regulation allow for a sub-national REDD+ related geospatial information consolidation and synchronization which is key to the development and implementation of REDD+ programs. WRI Indonesia is undertaking Riau One Map initiative as provincial operationalization of that regulation.

Rhett Butler

CEO and Managing Editor, Mongabay

Rhett Butler is the CEO and Managing Editor for Mongabay, an environmental science and conservation news web site headquartered in the U.S. Rhett has written extensively about REDD+, drivers of deforestation, conservation, and other forest-related issues globally. Recently, Rhett helped conceive and launch wildtech.mongabay.com, a platform that explores how conservation can better leverage technology.
