About the Ekeberg Restaurant

A source of inspiration to Munch

The Ekeberg Restaurant is placed elegantly about half-way up Ekeberg Hill just above Oslo. The building was completed in 1929 by Lars Backer, and is an early example of functionalist architecture. It is also said that the view from the Ekeberg of the Oslo fjord inspired Edvard Munch in the creation of his masterpiece, The Scream.

The Ekeberg area today

Towards the end of the nineties, Ekeberg Restaurant was closed and left to decay, until Christian Ringnes and Eiendomsspar bought the place and announced a major renovation. Together with restaurateur Bjørn Tore Furset they created a modern building which retains all its classic features. The Ekebergparken sculpture and national heritage park nearby the Ekeberg Restaurant was recently opened to the public.
