Producing TV drama for increased public understanding of forest issues

Enabling the Indonesian public to understand more about the management of the country’s forests with television broadcast, mentoring and training.

Organization

BBC Media Action

The project will enable the general public in Indonesia to understand more about forest management. Discussion programmes will provide a platform for people to question their political leaders about economic decisions being made about the country’s natural resources, to debate solutions, and to hold decision-makers to account.

Why: Improving public discussion

This project will respond to three inter-linked issues. First, there is currently a shortage of reliable and impartial information for the people affected by decisions about forestry as well as a shortage of opportunities for them to air their concerns.

Second, some parts of civil society in Indonesia currently lack the capacity to demand greater transparency from national and local government in order to hold them to account.

Finally, as a result the public, and in particular, the people most affected by forestry policies, are not well informed about the issues or engaged in discussions about policy decisions that affect their lives

Budget

Norad intends to offer NOK 40 million in total for the period 2016-2020.

What: National TV broadcasts, mentoring, and training

The project will include the production of a high profile television drama as well as a discussion programme on which audiences can ask their questions to leaders and policy-makers. These programmes will both seek to increase access to information for the public and encourage greater public engagement in policies that affect them. The discussion programmes will provide a critical platform for policy makers to explain more about their plans and actions, and for members of the public and civil society to assess whether they are delivering on their commitments. The drama will explore the impact of decisions being made about on people’s daily lives.

Expected results

A measurable improvement in the quality of public debate in the media and an increased understanding about forestry-related issues among target audiences.

Partners

The project will be implemented in partnership with Indonesian media partners and other implementing agencies being funded by NICFI in Indonesia.
