Geological Survey Department (GSD) organizes a SEA-workshop together with Oil for Development (OfD) in Zambia.

May 27th - 28th 2010, Geological Survey Department (GSD) organized a SEA-workshop together with Oil for Development (OfD) in Zambia.

For about a year Ministry of Mining and Petroleum (GSD) and Environmental Council of Zambia (ECZ ) in cooperation with the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management (DN) have been working to prepare a SEA for potensial petroleum activity on two areas in Zambia , The Luangwa Valley and the Liuwa area. The work has involved a great number of ministries and authorities in Zambia and people from local communities and NGOs. The work is described in detail in the preliminary SEA report. http://www.qdgc.org/temp/SEA10_ZA_national_prelim_report.pdf

The background for the work, the progress of the work itself and the report were presented and discussed in the workshop. The seminar involved a relatively large number of people, mainly from GSD, but also from other ministries. The workshop was organized as a mix of presentations and group work. The main presenations were made by GSD and ECZ. A lot of data has been collected and organized and made available in a GIS structure (Arc View).

OfD has concluded its activities in Zambia, and no further work will be suported by us. The workshop marks the end of the programme. GSD was challenged at the end of the workshop to organize a meeting among key stakeholders to see how the work could continue from Zambian side.
