Stream A: The Landscape Approach

Within a REDD+ framework, how can we address drivers of deforestation that originate beyond the forest sector?

Parallel A 1

Governance and Tenure in Landscape Approaches to REDD+

This session will provide an opportunity to review the role of governance and tenure in REDD+ landscapes. It will focus on what we know about governance principles such as participation, transparency, accountability, coordination etc. and will give specific attention to gender and tenure issues. Panelists will reflect on the many field- level projects that report considerable impact at the local level of engaging with communities on clarifying land tenure, promoting gender and overall governance. It is expected that the session will highlight positive lessons, challenges as well as opportunities for enhancing governance through landscape approaches to REDD+ at landscape level. It would also seek to address the crucial question of how the governance of landscapes link to national level REDD+ governance context- i.e. policies, legal and institutions.

Parallel A 2

Climate smart landscapes: Forest-Agriculture linkages

Giving participants the opportunity to learn from research and project experiences, this session will focus on how to integrate between forests and other land that uses REDD+ initiatives. Because forests are found in mixed landscapes, people use the land for multiple purposes; agriculture and energy needs often being the most prominent land use beyond forestry. As a result, many organisations have developed methodologies and field experiences that support a combined approach to the managing of multiple resources at landscape level and reducing emissions while promoting resilience. Land use planning and cross-sectorial implementation have emerged as key dimensions of attempts at integration. This session will highlight the opportunities and challenges involved in landscape approaches to REDD+ and compare these with project-level, jurisdictional level, and national-level approaches.
