On a global basis, more than 1.6 billion people have no access to modern energy services. In Africa, the situation is at the most critical, as more than 500 million people lives without electricity. Access to sustainable energy services is crucial in achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG), particularly the goals of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger and ensuring environmental sustainability.
